What Is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of pure plant essential oils to support physical and emotional wellbeing.

The term was introduced in the 1930s by René-Maurice Gattefossé, a French chemist who studied the properties of plant extracts after observing the effects of lavender oil when he burned himself in his laboratory.

While the word itself is relatively modern, the use of aromatic plant extracts dates back thousands of years. Ancient Egyptian, Roman and Greek civilisations used botanical oils and resins in rituals, skincare and therapeutic practices.

Today, aromatherapy continues to focus on the properties of essential oils derived directly from plants.

What Makes Aromatherapy Different?

True aromatherapy is rooted in essential oils.

Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts obtained through methods such as steam distillation or cold pressing. They contain naturally occurring aromatic compounds that give each oil its characteristic scent and properties.

Synthetic fragrance oils, by contrast, are created in a laboratory to imitate scent. While they may smell pleasant, they do not contain the same plant-derived constituents found in essential oils.

This distinction is important when choosing products labelled as “aromatherapy”.

What Is Aromatherapy Used For?

Aromatherapy is traditionally used to support:

  • Relaxation

  • Creating a calming atmosphere

  • Emotional balance

  • Focus and clarity

  • Restful sleep routines

Different essential oils are associated with different traditional uses. For example, lavender is widely recognised for its calming aroma, while citrus oils are often described as uplifting and refreshing.

At Lib’s Aromatherapy, blends are created with 100% pure essential oils to support wellbeing in everyday life.

Can Essential Oils Be Used on the Skin?

Essential oils can be used on the skin, but they must always be diluted in a suitable carrier oil before application. Common carrier oils include sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil and coconut oil.

Proper dilution ensures safe and comfortable use. You can read more about recommended dilution guidelines and safe usage in our Essential Oil Dilution Guide.

How Can You Use Aromatherapy at Home?

There are many simple ways to incorporate aromatherapy into daily life:

  • Diffusing essential oils

  • Adding diluted oils to bath water

  • Applying diluted blends to pulse points

  • Using essential oil candles and diffusers

  • Creating scent rituals as part of your evening routine

Aromatherapy is not about overpowering fragrance. It is about using pure plant oils intentionally to influence the atmosphere and mood.

Frequently Asked Questions About Aromatherapy

- Is aromatherapy scientifically proven?

Aromatherapy is widely studied in relation to scent, mood and relaxation. While research continues to develop, many essential oils have been traditionally used for centuries in wellness practices. Aromatherapy is best understood as a supportive practice rather than a medical treatment.

- Is aromatherapy the same as fragrance?

No. Aromatherapy is based on pure plant essential oils. Synthetic fragrance oils are created to imitate scent and do not contain the same naturally therapeutic compounds found in essential oils.

- Are essential oils natural?

Essential oils are natural plant extracts obtained through distillation or cold pressing. However, “natural” on a product label does not always guarantee purity, which is why ingredient transparency is important.

- Can I use essential oils every day?

Essential oils can be incorporated into daily routines when used correctly and diluted appropriately. Always follow safe usage guidelines.
